What characters are not allow in the file name, is there any site I can check
this?

rename a file and enter ^ as part of the name, hit enter, windows will
produce an error and in that error it will list all the illegal chars.

Flamer.

I just created and deleted a file named ^.txt

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Yes sorry it would be so difficult to try another character to get the
error message instead wouldnt it?

Flamer.
running Linux Debian sarge 3.1 / stable

I should have added all of this to my previous post. Sorry.

^ is not an illegal character.

If I try to type an illegal character naming or renaming a file in Windows
Explorer, the character will not display and that key on the keyboard makes
a beep. And I get no error message. For example < " > / ? \ | :

If I try to use a single period and no other characters, I get this message:

---------------------------
Rename
---------------------------
You must type a file name.
---------------------------
OK
