I just set up my lan at home, two xp pro pc's, and one of
the pc's gets prompted for a username and password when
attempting to access the pc to view shares. it does not do
the same the other way around. None of my accounts even
use pw's. Help?

Did you run the XP Network setup wizard on both machines? If yes, did you
make sure to turn off all firewalls on both machines? During setup, the
user is asked how this PC connects to the Internet. An incorrect response
will produce the result you describe. Many Home user assume the response
should by "Hub," usually the response that gets things going is "Gateway."

Yes I did. I chose to use the residential gateway option.
Both pc are assigned ip addresses from the router. I do
not use software firewalls. Nowhere do I have a pw option
set up. I just don't get it.

ok, I just noticed a discrepancy between the two pc's. My
Guest group was disabled on the one not allowing access to
the other, whereas the guest group was enabled on the one
freely allowing access to shares. Now, both pc's have
guest group enabled, but turned off in Accounts. NOW when
attempting to access the pc which will not share, I
get "permission denied" you do not have logon priviledges,
etc etc. I tried turning guest on, but same message.
Whoever can help me here is a god(ess) among mankind!!!!!!

Did you check to be sure the XP Firewall is turned off when setting up the
network, this is sometimes overlooked? Open Control Panel, right click
"Local Area Connection," go to the Advanced tab and be sure there is no
check next "Protect my computer and network..."

How about antivirus, did you make sure to turn that off as well during
network setup?
