Is there any way to password protect individual folders?
Living with three college students who each have a
designated folder and would each like to protect his own
folder. Thank you.

Three accounts using the same computer? Or one account and three users?

The latter would be difficult.. And not possible with just windows,
methinks.
The former would be possible if the users were not admin users and you
formatted with NTFS.

Hi Mike,

There is no way to password protect individual folders. What you can do is
setup ACL's (Access Control Lists) so that each student is only allowed to
access their folder. The drive that has the folders would need to have
NTFS.

Here are instructions for setting up NTFS.

To set ACL's:

Right click their folder, select Properties. Click on the Security Tab.
Add the User that you want to have access to the list. By default the
Administrators group will have access to the folder. You can change that if
you want.
Click Ok.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Greetings --

WinXP's file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or allow, the
cumbersome method of password protection for individual applications,
files, or folders. Instead, it uses the superior method of explicitly
assigning file/folder permissions to individual users and/or groups.

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.

As a work-around, you can place the file in a compressed folder,
and set a password to uncompress the folder to view/access its
contents.
