Was intending on setting up a PVR using MYTHTV. That is until I went
shopping at COSTCO. There I noticed commercial DVD recorders for little
more than the price of a standard VCR.

Curious if anyone here has experience using both and can offer some
comments accordingly?

No, but I'm sure getting bit hard by the commercial DVD player
market. I'm on a first name basis with the UPS dude who ships
all the RMA'd pieces of crap I bought at both Wal-Mart and Kmart.
Don't buy a Sony dvd-anything. Or a Sharp either. I almost got
smart with the Sony, and bought an extended warranty for 3
years. I'm going to need it. I've shipped that stinking thing to
the repair depot 3 times now, and last week it started glitching
again. The Sharp, I just gave away. I only paid $90 for it, so
what the heck ?

Can I respectfully ask you to quote some of the message to which you
are responding? Those of us who don't read newsgroups on the web have
already deleted the messages from the previous day and need to be
given an idea of where the conversation came from.

Thank you
Ann

The ones I saw were LiteOn and I believe GoVideo. LiteOn products I've
used for years with good success. Just haven't heard about these home
TV DVD recorders.

About Sony I couldn't agree more. I use to work for Sony a long time ago
when they produced good products but my cd player and home stereo
system both had problems a month after purchase. When it costs $30
shipping for warranty service other vendors start looking like bargains.

With DVD recorders you are limited by the media. You will need to
switch DVD's as you would with a VHS, granted it will be better quality
and larger capacity.

Furthermore, to use time skip you will need to buy a DVD recorder that
uses DVD-RAM which, while it is better technology, it is less supported
than standard DVD+/-R/RW. So, you will have some issues reading the disc
in your computer if you don't already have an optical drive that
supports DVD-RAM or if you want to lend the disc to a friend that most
likely does not have a dvd player capable of playing DVD-RAM.

Also, there may or not be any issues with a guide to help you set up
recordings. To me, one of the benefits to a pvr is the ability to
easily schedule recordings using a guide. If the dvd recorder doesn't
support some sort of guide that "knows" what's on (cable?), then it
makes it less useful in my opinion.

With a Myth box or any other hard drive based pvr, you can record more
content (assuming the drive is larger than ~4G which it most probably
is). The disadvantage compared to a dvd recorder is that it is not as
portable and of course somewhat more expensive. I'm not sure how much
of an issue these are to you.
