Putting shortcuts on the Taskbar

Hi People,
a bit of help please, how do I drag a short cut to the taskbar, I have done
it before, but had to reinstall, and now when I drag an icon to the task bar
I get a can't do sign. Any help would be appreciated thanks

The *task*bar shows you buttons for what *tasks* you have running (which
have a window) to let you easily change focus between them. It is NOT
used for shortcuts. The Quick*Launch* toolbar is used for shortcuts but
you'll have to enable it to display it, or you might have created a
custom toolbar (so you'll have to find where you saved those shortcuts
to point over there when creating a new custom toolbar).
