Hello all,

Hope someone can help. I want to take my bro's HD out of his computer and put in mine. I run winxp, he's running a
partitioned HD(win98se and win2000). Can I just hook his up to mine and go go go, or is that just not going to happen? He has some
big files I'd like to transfer to my computer...thanks for any info...

Hook it up as slave to the existing drive, checking the jumpers on both to
make sure they're compatible and correct. XP will detect the new drive and
you can then copy files from it to yours.

It should work fine. I'd suggest slaving it off of your current hard drive.
I actually have a hard drive tray that slides out the front of my wife's
tower. It makes it possible to swap my (second) hard drive without opening
the case of the computer. I do what you hope to do frequently, so that's
why I got the tray. It fits in a 5.25" drive bay. The housing is connected
to power and mainboard. The slide-out tray connects to whatever hard drive
you want to use. -Dave

First check your BIOS to see that your drive is Primary Master.

If you hook his up to the same IDE channel, you will have to set his as
Slave. Look on his disk for information about how to put the jumper in the
Slave position. If the information isn't there, you'll have to see the
manufacturer's web site.

If your secondary IDE channel is unconnected, you can just hook his up to
that channel. His becomes Secondary Master recording to your BIOS.

If all you want to do is transfer files (to copy files), you can do that
simply from within Windows XP after his drive is installed.

If you follow the instructions above and it doesn't work (or does work),
removing his disk should put things back the way they were on your
computer. Just be careful that your drive remains your Windows XP startup
drive, that you do nothing to change it.

Good luck.

What do you mean, go go go? If you mean will you have Win98se and
Win2000 on your computer, NO. If you mean, can you transfer some files
and use the drive as a data drive, YES.

Good luck, jimbo

I think that if you do this XP may automatically change your configuration
around. This is especially true if your brother's drive has an active boot
partition on it. Since he is running 98 and 2000 he probably does. You
should check with the Microsift public groups before you do this. I suspect
that drive letters may get changed automatically during boot up if your not
careful. This can cause short-cuts and paths and the like to get broken if
the corresponding drive letter changes.
