Putting apps in the system tray

I sometimes have apps running in the background which I don't want to
see as a tab on the taskbar.

Is there a way to modify something to make the apps shrink to the
system tray instead of the taskbar?

The only way I know to do it is to write this facility into the program
in question. Some programs have it, many don't. I don't know any way to
'impose' it on some program that was not designed to do it (but that
doesn't mean there isn't one .. just that I've never seen it).

Hi Vance - There's a free third party program called TrayMin which used to
be available from PC Mag which will do
this. You can still get it here: http://pacon.free.fr/traymin.zip
Basically, you just right click on the Min box to minimize it to the tray.
Works fine.

Hi Vance - Well, I don't know if you've some sort of XP specific problem or
not. I've found that there are, very occasionally, some windows that
TrayMin won't minimize (I've got one - see below). You might see if it
works on other windows than just the one you tried it on. Otherwise,
there's another approach you can try using a program called HideIt, free,
here: http://www.expocenter.com/hideit/ This one's not as convenient since
you have to select the window you're interested in from a list of active
windows in the program and uncheck it, which then hides it (rather than
minimizes it - the window is still there and active using resources, which
may not be what you're after). HideIt itself, of course, you put in the
Tray. I use it for the express purpose of automatically hiding one
particular window at boot up that TrayMin won't minimize off of the Task Bar
(a DFX equalizer I use in conjunction with a streaming radio audio player
while I work - ViddiPlayer, http://www.viddiradioplayer.com/ which is in my
Tray :) ). Perhaps that will help.

Jim, I hav elloed at this some more and I can make it work. For some
reason I have to right double-click and then it goes to the system
tray. A single left click while it is there restores it.

So it does work on XP. And it is very nice. Thank you for that.

It is free and compared to $20 for Active Captions which doesn't do
a whole lot more it is very good value indeed!

YW. Vance - Glad you've gotten it working.
