Purging "local area network" connection information

I recently swapped out network cards in my XP machine. My "local area
connection" is now showing as "3". When I set up the new card, I entered the
same IP address I'd been using with the other card and got a warning about
the IP being used by the other card, and reminded that there would be
conflicts if the card was re-installed. Not a problem since I'm not using it
anymore. What bothers me is that the old card info is still in XP somewhere
(confirmed by the warning message and the "3" at the end of the LAN icon).
Is there a way to get this old info out of the OS?

Thanks,
Jewels

Follow the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and
uninstall the old network cards:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not Connected to the
Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539

You can then right-click and rename the local area connection to
remove the "3" if desired.

To avoid this problem, uninstall a device in Device Manager before
permanently removing it from the computer.
