Purchasing XP Pro

More than likely cheapsoftware is selling an OEM version; which is
technically illegal unless its included as part of a system and/or hardware
purchase. Also, the OEM version, once installed, is supported by the OEM -
not Microsoft; and is forever tied to the system initially installed upon.

What do you think? A brief look at the Terms and Conditions
page of that web site sends up enough red flags that it
practically screams "rip-off".

Here's my personal favorite:
"2.3. You cannot register the software with the manufacturer
and updates are available not for all the products;"

Translated, they're selling you software that uses a pirated
volume license key.

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. An OEM version of XP
Pro can be purchased from any number of reputable online
merchants. Here's just one example:

Windows XP Professional

Good luck

Read the fine print. Understand how this particular discount
market works. Check the list of what is actually being sold
for this price. Overhead can be minimized by eliminating the
box, packaging, manual, guides and even the cdrom itself via
broadband downloads, for instance, and minimal or no support.
How valid the XP version - caveat emptor. Legality - might be
allowed in the country of residence of the seller but not of
the buyer.

There is a fair market value for Windows XP. It is unfair to
the buyer when the manufacturer consciously seeks a windfall
profit that engenders the vicious circle that entails piracy,
or the story of greed and Robin Hood. And Windows XP is, by
no means, worth $299 when there are OEM dealers selling fast
XP (3.0 GHz) systems including flatscreen monitors for $399
and less.

I would recommend pricegrabber.com for all hardware and software purchases.
Based on my experience, I would say they only deal with legitimate vendors.

Your last sentence leads me to believe that the WPA and WGA
along with the sale of XP, is not entirely on the up and up.

No, that's most definitely *not* a legitimate site.

There is *NO* legitimate source for downloading Microsoft operating
systems and/or productivity applications, unless you happen to own a
very expensive MSDN subscription, and are downloading from private (open
to subscribers, only) MSDN links.

1) Windows XP Pro 32bit OEM Media only:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=708729/sort_type=price
Only by looking accurately the fine print or product details,
or by following the links, do you discover that this is
not a working version: it's just the media,
you still have to buy the license elsewhere:
http://www.directdeals.com/item-E85-01892.aspx $28.24
http://www.directdeals.com/item-E85-01172.aspx $30.00

Making this look as a working version on the main link,
while a different scheme, doesn't seem to me more honest
than yourcheapsoftware at $49.95.

2) Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 64 Bit
Full version with CD and licence:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Microsoft_Windows_XP_Professional_x64,__8907762/sort_type=price
http://www.edirectsoftware.com/product.php?product_id=16240 $72.04

This, comparatively, seems to me
not much more expensive than yourcheapsoftware at $49.95.
