Greetings. Here's a stupid question: is it legal to sell an OEM version
of Windows XP? Someone showed me a Web site where Windows XP Home
Edition was being sold for around $90 with a non-component PC peripheral
(like a chassis fan)-and the vendor decided what peripheral to send you!
I've never heard of that; I always thought OEM versions of Microsoft
software came with and were attactched to a particular PC.

Hi,

Yes, it's quite legal. The included hardware restrictions have been relaxed
so far that nearly anything can qualify.

OEM versions must be sold with a piece of hardware, normally a
motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC, although Microsoft has
greatly relaxed the hardware criteria for WinXP. For WinXP, any
_non-peripheral_ hardware component, such as a power cable or fan,
qualifies.

The rule has been relaxed a great deal, but it was never as
restrictive as having to get it with a particular PC. Back in the
Windows 9x days, the requirement was that an OEM version could be
sold with a new computer, a new motherboard, or a new hard drive.
But these days it can be sold with any hardware at all.

No problem. Just remember that with OEM version your telephone support comes
from the company that sold it to you NOT Microsoft. How much support do you
expect to get for the profit on a $5 fan? If you need telephone support
consider the Retail version.

Even a $0.01 jumper?
