Pull-down arrows freeze MS applications

This happens in Word and Excel (Office XP 2002 running with Windows XP), but
I was wondering if it is really an XP OS problem.

When I click on "Save As..." or "Insert..." or "Open..." I get a daughter
window. In the upper left, there is an area that one can browse for folders
using the pull-down arrow at the immediate right of the area that contains
the folder name. (This area might be labeled "Save as" or "Look in".)

When I click on the pull-down area, the application immediately freezes, and
I have to ctrl-alt-del the application and relaunch it to use the application
again. While I have been able to work around this issue by using other
commands in the daughter window, it is pretty inconvenient.

Does anyone have any insight into what I need to do to fix this? Thanks in
advance! Carol

This happens most often when you have network drives that are mapped but not
currently connected or cannot be connect to. Are there any mapped drives on
your computer? If you're unsure, open My Computer as they'll be listed there.

Thanks, yes, I have a VPN that I only connect to when I need it, because when
it is connected, it causes my MS Outlook to stop receiving emails. Is there
a way to fix both problems?

DA, I think that this is exactly what is going on with the pull-down arrows -
so I will read the links and see if I can resolve this issue. Not sure it
will resolve the problem with Outlook not receiving email when I am connected
to the VPN - any thoughts on that one? You have been most helpful! ~C

As far as your dropdowns are concerned those MS articles will solve the
problem. The e-mail/vpn issues, I'm not sure the problem there. Perhaps you
should create a new thread. Thanks.
