publisher converts file into a unreadable format? What do I do?

I am opening a text document.
It says "publisher converting document" then there is 20 pages or so of
unreadable lines of information... ??
How do I have it coverted to the right format?

Exactly what kind of file are you trying to open? Is it supported by
Publisher?
