PST Madness

Pst files seem to accumulate like dust. After migrating from Outlook 97,
00, xp, and now, using Outlook 2003, I have close to 30 pst files.

Perhaps part of the problem is that I use outlook as a client for 10 or so
different pop and http accounts and have 3 different profiles. But the way
pst files are usually listed, i.e.-00000000009.pst, is confusing.

Any suggestions on cleaning/deleting the pst files that are no longer
necessary, or ones that are merely duplicates of profiles long deleted? Or
pst files created in Outlook that were deleted from Outlook, but still
remain under docs/settings/user/local/appl/micr/outlook?

Thanks for any suggestions. Outlook express seems so much simpler..

Different profiles can all point to the same PST file. There is no
reason, unless YOU have a reason, to have more than one PST file.

You can consolidate all of the messages in a single PST file and then
get rid of the others. If any of the others are actually used, change
the profile to point to the "one" master PST file that you will keep.

Personally, I put the PST files in \My Documents\E-Mail\. This seems
like a logical place, so that if I backup the "My Documents" folder, I
have backed up my E-Mail as well. In fact, I've never understood why
Microsoft didn't put it there to begin with (they would, of course,
probably have called it "My E-Mail").
