Hi,

I have a problem in that I had 4 years worth of email archived in PST
format. I burned it to DVD but when I tried to open it on my new computer,
the PST will not open.

I am aware of 'UNICODE' PST files in OL2003 - could this be the reason I
cannot open it?

JT
PS. I'm running OL2003

No.
All PST files are compatible with Outlook 2003.
Did you remove the read only attribute the file acquired from being on a
DVD?

The read only attribute is not enabled. Is this a common issue and are there
any decent tools to repair or recover the PST other than Scanpst - which
didn't work?

I'm getting the error message

You've provided so little real information that I'll have to turn you over
to a mind reader.

The 1.4gb PST file I burned onto a DVD. Now when I open it with Outlook
(after copying to hard disk & disable read only) I get a message:

The File C:\2004.pst is not a valid PST file.

I've tried using Scanpst.exe and also some third party tool with no luck.
They all seem to provide the same message - 'This is not a valid PST file'.

Strange there are no scratches on the DVD and the other files burned on that
DVD don't have any problems.

I wonder if you exported this PST file before you copied it to the DVD. That
would be an easy way to corrupt it.
If the Inbox Repair Tool fails to repair the PST file, you can use the
following tool to find out what can be fixed:

I move all emails after reading into that PST.

I already tried that tool - looks like this one is lost forever :-(

Afraid so.
Tell me how you created the PST file in the first place and how you burned
it to a DVD.

I can't rember exactly how I created the PST (it was last year). However, I
normally just go to File--> New --> Outlook Data File..

As for the DVD burning, it is a standard burned with NERO as a data CD

Have you copied the file from the DVD to your hard drive and turned off the
read-only flag? You can't open a .pst file stored on a DVD.

Yes Sue, I copied it to the hard disk and made sure the file wasn't read
only.

I can only assume some sort of corruption occured while burning that file to
DVD.

Was Outlook closed at the time you burned the PST to the DVD? If not, that,
too, can result in an unusable PST.
