.pst file not compatible

I am attempting to import a .pst file into Outlook 2002.

I receive message The file f:\abc.pst is not compatible with this version of
the Personal Folders Information Service. Contact your administrator

I run a series of computers in different locations and use a storage device
to carry the current .pst file to upload to the current computer.

Is there any problem with using .pst file written by Outlook 2003 with
Outlook 2002? If so, is there a solution? I would hate to have to
repurchase all new Office copies for all my computers each time there is a
change.

Thanks so much in advance for any insight anyone could provide.

In outlook 2003 if you have a .pst that was created in 03 and want to move
it to a PC that is running 02 you get this error. Outlook 03 .pst files are
a little different than 02 .pst files, they can be larger than the 02 .pst.
They can be over 2gig in size. To fix your problem I believe you can in
Outlook 03 export your current .pst file to a Outlook 02 version.

I hope this helps you out!

Thanks

Thanks so much for your speedy response. I would have hoped there might be
a patch to allow all the pst files to be backward compatible.

No you can't export to the old format.
Instead you must create a New PST file in the old format, then copy your
information into it.

Wow that is discouraging. Is there any alternative method to sync contacts
and emails between versions of Outlook?

Why not ust use the same file format in both? Do you really need to exceed
the 2 GB limit the old format imposed?

Russ,
No there is no need to create a pst file larger than 2GB. The present file
in all its glory is 1 Meg.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you mean when you say "copy your
information into it." I have 4 computers and have been saving my pst files
to a removable usb disk using File/Import Export/Export to a file/Personal
Folder File (.pst). In my other office I use File/Import Export/Import from
another program or file/Import from a Personal Folder File.

One of the computers has Office 2003 the others have Office 2002.
Everything works great until I attempt to import from the file written by
Office 2003 on the computer with Office 2002. Is there a more logical way
to do this?

Import and Export is a poor way to back up PST files. Each time you do it
you invite data corruption. Use Import and Export only when you need to
convert your PST file to some other format.
For backup purposes, simply save PST files to another location to reuse if
necessary.

I can understand exactly what you mean. I should be using the pst file as a
direct access to the information by using file/open/. However, would I
still face the same problem accessing the pst files written using Outlook
2003 with Outlook 2002?

Thanks so much for your help. I truly appreciate it.

No. As long as you create and use an "Outlook 97-2002" type of PST file in
all versions, they will be perfectly compatible.
