What is the maximum capacity allowed in a Outlook 2003 PST?

What is the maximum capacity allowed in a pre-Outlook 2003 PST?

Thanks for your time,
--Ron

I believe it's 20 GB with Outlook 2003.

It is ~ 2 GB with Outlook 2002. Possibly (not sure) the same , or less with
pre-2002 editions. I'm using Outlook / Word 2002 (part of Office XP Small
Business) and that's what it is for this version.

<paste>
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 has both a different format and a larger
overall size limit for the personal folders (.pst) file than the .pst files
that are in the earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook. In Outlook 2002 and
earlier, the .pst files are in the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI) format, and the overall size has a limit of 2 gigabytes (GB).

By default, .pst files are in the Unicode format in Outlook 2003.
Additionally, the overall size of the .pst files has a limit that is more
than the 2-GB limit that is imposed by the ANSI .pst files. By default, the
limit for a Unicode .pst file in Outlook 2003 is configured to be 20 GB. For

The theoretical limit on unicode 2003 .pst files is 32 terrabytes, although
the default limit is 20 gigs which can be changed by a registry entry.

Prior versions have an absolute limit of 2 gigs, but in practice, it is
actually about 1.87 and people can have issues as low as 1.5 or 1.6 gigs.

That's the minimum limit, but it can be changed with registry settings. The
theoretical limit is, I believe, 32 TB.

That's the limit for older versions as well.

So I see, Brian. Thanks for the added info/ clarification / assurance.

Had an issue with my .PST's getting corrupted a while back (near 1.67 GB or
so) and by using the scanpst.exe twice - after first backing up the
corrupted PST - fixed everything. First ran a scanpst on the corrupted one,
but that didn't fix everything. Than ran a scanpst on the previous
scanpst'ed one and I was back in business.

In fact, It worked better than Outlook Recovery (demo) which only retrieved
all attachments but didn't retrieve the messages themselves; Demo
limitation. AND, an expensive program I might add.

I now keep a much tidier Inbox and all primary Folders.pst. *ggg*

Cheers,

I am knew to message boards. My Office 2003, which I believe I am still
using a 2002 pst file, is full. I clicked on the link in your post, however,
under Policies\Mircosoft I am unable to locate Office folder. What am I
doing incorrectly? I thank you for your assistance.

You cannot change the max size of a OL2002 pst
If you are still using the old data file, create a new one in OL2003, set it
as the default & if neccessary copy data from old to new
(The default size of a unicode pst is 20gb)

Hi.. New to these threads...
I need to know the max capacity of outlook 2003. One post indicated it is 20
GB and another says 32 TB with a registry change.

How does one make the registry change?

Also how does one check outlook to see what is the actual capacity?
Thanks,
Walt

Both are correct, to a degree. The 20 GB limit is the out-of-the-box limit.
The 32 TB limit, though, is only theoretical. I'd never suggest coming near
it.
How does one make the registry change?
