My computer crashed a couple of weeks ago. I have a
backup pst file with all of my email contacts info. How
do put all of my old info into my current outlook program?

Delete the .pst file that the current installation created. Copy your .pst
file to a location of your choice. Open Outlook and when it starts to whine
about the .pst file, point it to the file you saved.

How did you originally find the .pst file
in order to back it up?

Now, that might be a legit question. I've searched my system, showing
all system & hidden files, and the search has not found a single
instance of *.pst, *.pab.,*.fav, etc. How do you find the originals?
I've backed up my data to a Zip disk using the OL Export utility to
create a *.pst, but other than that, there appear to be none on my
system. And since I did it so I could reinstall this lousy XP OS,
when I reintall Office 2000, how do I restore it to OL? And no
smart-assed answers, thank you, even if that's the only part of your
anatomy with any smarts.

Ok Michael!
You have (inadvertently) given us one piece of
HARD information - Office 2000.
Now! Outlook has a spot where it puts .pst Files,
but YOU can put them anywhere!
For Now, let's find Outlooks spot -
Run Outlook
Tools>Services
'Services' Tab
Select 'Personal Folders' (Click Once on it)
'Properties' Button, and examine 'Path:'
This is where the .pst file is - note Path and File Name!
Cancel/Close All
Run Windows Explorer and navigate to that Path
Rename the Personal Folders File by putting 'old_'
at the beginning of the name.
Restore your old file, and rename as necessary to
the Name of the PST file.

Check Outlook! Ok Now?

PS
Did you search sub-folders? The likely location is:
Windows 2000
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\<YourUserName>\Local Settings
\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\<SomeName>.pst
Windows Xp
C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserName>\Local Settings
\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\<SomeName>.pst

PPS
Most parts of my anatomy have 'smarts', but thats NOT your
affair!!!!!!!!

Much obliged. Only there is no 'services' tab anywhere in any of the
menus on this program. I went & checked my Office 2000 manual by Bott
& Leonhard, and it stated where to find it (user\data\ms\ol.) I got
there and found .fav, .dat, .rwz, .nick, .txt files...but no .pst.
Search still finds nothing. It's not there. It seems like it might
not even be necessary, at least to run the program. Will I be able to
restore OL by using the backup.pst I created with the export function
after I reinstall the OS & Office 2000? If so, how do I restore it?
Again, thanks.

Michael,
Please do ONE THING AT A TIME!!!
Outlook 2000 HAS a 'Tools' Menu Item.
Outlook 2000 HAS a 'Services' Item on that Menu.
If this is NOT the Case then:
Run Outlook
Help>About Microsoft Outlook
'Microsoft(R) Outlook (R) ?????????? ....'

What does your PC offer for the ?????????.... ?
