Proxy Connection Problem

I recently installed Avast AV program, and in order to use one of its
features, Web Shield, with Windows 98, you have to manually set-up a proxy
connection, in this case for dial-up. I followed the instructions on their
site, but now I can't get IE6 to open, although OE for newsgroups, which is
set up to follow the IE connection, works fine. Here's what I did: Tools,
Internet Options, Connections, and in the dial-up section of the panel,
Settings. I then checked "Use proxy server for this connnection", which is
the only connection I have. Under address I entered 127.0.0.1, under Port I
entered 12080.

The same proxy entries also block Mozilla browser but do allow Thunderbird
email to get through.

What's the problem?

Well, I can answer my own question. For some reason the new proxy settings
were ignored in mail and newsgroups so the old "direct connect" setting
governed, but for the browsers you lose your connection until you reboot.
Now all the programs connect through the proxy without a problem.
