Is there a way to secure a file in such a way that if I send that file to someone else they can view it but not edit it? furthermore is there a way for me to timestamp it so that after 3 months (as an example) the file becomes unusable

specific file types I am interested in securing are: jpg, targa, vrml and a few other 3D/2D related file formats

any guidance or advice you could provide would be appreciated

thanks

You can try just about anything but they all fail once the user realizes
they can simply press the Print Screen key when the image is displayed. That
gets it to the clipboard and from there it's out of your hands.

what kinds of things could I try? I'm not so worried about a single image file as I am of the whole group of files or at least the vrml files which refrence the others

what about time stamping files, is this even possible

thank

Drew, thanks for the lead to Right Management. I just
finished reading about it and it's exactly what I need
except that I can't use it. I am not sending office
documents and my clients I am sending multimedia formats
like tiff, VRML, as well as other 3D formats. Also, these
clients most likely will not have internet connects on
the machines they will be running the file on to connect
to a RMS server.

Isn't there anything in windows that would allow me to
simply set the attributes of any file to read-only and
lock that?

much appreciated!

What you're describing is rights management. Here's the Windows Rights
Management Services site:
