Protecting a document and preventing it being opened by any other

Word2k

I have a document which has a password on it to prevent others from opening
it. The problem is that it can be opened in Notepad. Can this be prevented?
 
I don't have Word 2000 to verify, but certainly with later versions the
default encryption is weak and there are alternatives availoable which will
prevent this. See what encryption options Word 2000 offered. Tools > options
security > advanced.
