If I change the attribute of my HOSTS file to "read only", will it be
safe from being hijacked?
BTW, the previous post about yahoo being blocked, I downloaded a
different HOSTS file from a different site, instead of 1,703 kb, this
one is 231, not as complete but the other one blocked too much, anyone
know of an ultimate HOSTS file that is updated regularly?
Thanks,
Ramey

Hi Ramey,

A very good HOSTS file, written and regularly updated by MS-MVP Mike

Thanks, that's the one I ended up using that I found yesterday, still
curious if making it "read only" can help protect it??
Anyone know?
Thanks,
Ramey

No. But it won't hurt to change your HOSTS file to Read-only anyway. I
have mine set that way. Locking the hosts file will prevent most hosts
hijackers from doing harm, but malware can do all kinds of things. You also
need other protection.

Also see Curt Christianson's post in this thread.

FWIW, Zone Alarm (even the free one) can "lock the hosts file" for you,
look under "Firewall - Advanced". I personally recommend version
6.1.744.001, an older version - it was the last 6.1 release that didn't
have any "issues", and still works fine. The newer releases are more
bloated...

Spybot can do it too, if you activate it's "background" mode.

google for "lock hosts file", there are other remedies...

Could you please quote at least a portion of the message to which you reply?
Otherwise there is no context.
