My printer has been installed and works just fine. However, whenever I start
Windows the new hardware wizard pops up for me to install the printer again.
After I click cancel on a pop-up window that comes up from the system tray
saying that this device wasn't installed properly and therefore might not
work. What's causing this and how do I stop it?

Is it just a printer or does it have other functions as well (scanner, card
reader, etc.)?

I can only speak from experience with Epson inkjet printers
but the advice for installing Epson printer software/drivers
is to: (1) unplug printer's USB cable, (2) install printer
software, (3) reboot, and (4) reconnect printer USB cable.
The OS will then find your printer. Otherwise, problems
may arise.

In your case, I'd use Add/Remove control panel to uninstall
printer software, unplug the printer's cable, and then reboot.
Then follow steps 2-4 above. You may wish to check your
printer's web support page to determine if a newer printer
driver is available for your printer. If so, download it and
follow the manufacturer's advice on installing it.

Good luck.

You haven't completed the install!

Just leave the printer CD in the tray, reboot - and allow the computer to
finish the installation. Keep rebooting until you don't see the screen any
longer.

I am having this same problem. I realize that XP believes that the printer
install is only half done but I have an HP 882c that is installed and works
fine. When I boot up, everytime, I get the add new hardware deal for
"printer" not for hp882c. I uninstalled the printer, reinstalled, and I still
get the problem. i cannot get rid of it. Now, I am trying to install a
pcmcia usb2 port to my laptop and it seems like the printer add new hardware
is screwing up that install. What can I do?
By the way, I will retry uninstalling and removing the printer usb plug,
installing thesoftware before plugging in the printer to see if it now works.
But I am 99.99% sure that I've done this 2-3 times with no success. Wish me
luck.

I am sorry. I left out an important bit of info. This all started when I
tried to use a floppy drive with my laptop, XP wouldn't recognize it and I
tried to install a drvr for the floppy drive. Of course i did not have a cd
with the driver so I used a generic floppy drive drvr from the internet as
the add hardware pgm asks you. result is described above. thanks
