Hi!

I don't suppose anyone has run into reliable free tools for project
management, something like MS Project with resource planning,
gantt-charting etc would be nice.

Btw, to my experience, GanttProject isn't really up to it, in case you
would wonder :) GP is just swell otherwise, but the export seems a bit
useless, and I just have to get decent reports to enclose in other
documents. Plus planning only in one day increments just doesn't cut it.

Open Workbench? Have never used it myself, but it might suit your
needs...

Wald

Thanks Wald! I downloaded OpenWorkbench and it sure seems to be a hefty
package. Seems that CA, formerly known as Computer Associates, is
backing the developement.

It seems that Workbench shoud be at least on the par with MS Project,
but GUI doesn't seem too intuitive. This needs a good serious
looking-into. This might be the other killer app besides OO.o when it
comes to open business apps.

Kalle;

After Wald's post I poked around the Workbench site. Their forum seems
to be /very/ active. Lots of participation. A very good sign. Check
out the thread on converting to MS Project format, for example.

If you want something less hefty than OpenWorkbech, try GanttProject.
http://ganttproject.sourceforge.net/ It requires the Java2
runtimes:http://www.java.com/en/download/

The reporting feature alone knocks this one out of the ballpark. It is
built on Java 2, which means it's usable if you have people on different
platforms collaborating on a project(Windows, Mac, Linux).

I got half a dozen people using it, and they love it as it is much
easier to use, even than project.

Originally I started this thread after I tried GanttProject 2.0. With my
setup GP seemed to be a little unstable and I wasn't very pleased with
with it altogether.

Though I have hand it to GP, the automatic html reporting function is a
veery nice feature, but the pdf export didn't work. It just may be that
I have old java installed, maybe I have to get the java2 and give it a
second chance.

John H. posting from work.

Kalle ;

Please do update Java. The latest Java2 runtimes really do the trick.
Users are loving it's simplicity.
