Programs won't connect to Internet

I just upgraded the operating sustem from ME to XP Professional. I am trying to get onto the Internet. The modem connects but none of my programs (IE, Messenger, etc.) will connect to the Internet. IE says the usual DNS error. Ping did not give four results and also said I was not on the Internet.

Talked with your ISP? They can usually come up with a fix...when basic
set up goes awry.
