Programs slow to open immediately after boot-up

A few weeks ago, one of my computers developed an interesting
malfunction.

Immediately after boot-up, everything appears OK; indeed, all files,
folders, network connections etc. behave perfectly normally. However,
for about 2-3 minutes, no PROGRAMS will launch.

Double-click on IE, the egg-timer appears for a few seconds, then
disappears. In fact, double-click on any program shortcut and the same
thing happens. Then, after a couple of minutes, all the programs that
I've clicked on to open suddenly spring to life.
From then on, the computer runs at full speed and everything is fine -
until the next re-boot... Then we have the same routine again.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be happening here? The machine
is XP SP2, fully updated. It's defragmented, error-checked, and so
far as I can establish, free from spyware.

Any thoughts appreciated, and many thanks -

Something must be starting with Windows. Do clean-boot troubleshooting
to find out what it is.

It's possible that your anti-virus program is scheduled to scan your
hard drive each time you start your computer, and the process takes 2-3
minutes. This is common.

Still it's not a bad idea to check more thoroughly for malware.
