Programs slow to load on startup

Reinstalled XP on a new hard drive. Installed Norton Antivirus 2004. Whenever my computer starts up, Norton appears in system tray as disabled. One and a half minutes later, Norton becomes enabled on its own. 5-10 seconds later, Messenger loads in system tray. I have enabled Norton and checked the boxes to ensure it loads on windows startup and bootup. I have installed other programs (Musicmatch is one) since then and they load in the system tray immediately. What is causing Norton and Messenger to take so long to load and not the other programs? Help!
