Right well bear with me here as I dare say I'm something of a novice but I do seem to be learning a lot fast since I decided to upgrade my comp! I recently installed a new msi motherboard, 512mb of ddr400 mem a new 80gb hard disk and of course Windows xp.Now I seem to have ironed out many of the probs I had in the begining(and there were many!) but I have one major one that I cant fathom, when ever I run a program (game based) it loads up, plays for a short time the the screen goes blue, I get error msgs and the comp shuts down.I'm thinking it's to do with my graphics card/driver it's a geforce mx420, I have downloaded and downloaded supposed driver updates but am I doing more harm than good is it that the mx420 isn't really up to the job? Any advise please as this one has got me stumped.

Try; Start, Run, type in "dxdiag" (Without the quotes), and see what
version of DirectX you have. This will also show other information about
installed items. If you don't have the latest version of "DirectX", here is
the download site for it. Good Luck.

Did the original one on the CD work at all for ANY length of time? It's
really hard to call, because usually you are better off with the "Latest"
driver from the Mfgrs site. There are constant updates coming out, and no
telling how long your Card & it's CD sat on the "Shelf" at the retailer.
Make sure you follow the prompts at the Mfgrs site for the CORRECT driver
(eg: ATI has about 3 menus to go thru, each one leads you to different
results, depending what you choose on the first selection (I know yours
isn't ATI, I'm just using an example) You could either "Roll Back" the
driver in the Properties of your Display adaptor, or update driver using
your CD if that ever worked better than now. Let us know.

Thanks for the quick response Willie, it appears I already have the latest
version of direct x and it appears to be working perfectly (everything is
according to my comp!) The other night it showed an error in nv4.dll. this
is my main graphics driver right? I see various other people having had
trouble once downloading new drivers for nividia, are these drivers supposed
to suit all their cards? I'm just going where I'm directed and downloading
what I'm told but I'm starting to feel like I'm doing my harm than good,
should I try and re-install the origional driver thats on the cd which came
with the card?

Thanks once again Willie I will give that a go, I origionally started updating my driver when I installed my msi motherboard, I went to their live sight and downloaded the drivers they said I needed maybe it was infact the case that thses were just the latest ones available and maybe not suited to my needs.Anyway, thanks for the help much appreciated I'll keep you posted!

What's the Model # of the MSI board you have now?

I typed your cards name in Google, and I see a few people having issues with
this card. Does your MB board have an AGP slot? I would do away with the
PCI card, and opt for a reasonably priced AGP card...Not sure what your
computing intentions are, but there are quite a few AGP cards out there. Of
course not everyone has $$$ to spend. Keep us posted.

Is that so!!! trust me to buy a troublesome card! well it has an agp slot and it supports 8x whatever that is so I had been considering that option, I just didnt want to splash out (not a big splash mind!) and find I still had the same problem, i think it may well be the way to go, might get another motherboard whilst I'm at it any suggestions? As for my needs, well I do play the odd game but not many and not that often but I just hate it when things aren't right! you no what I mean?

Sorry to keep adding to this novel, but the more I read of your original
post, I wonder a few things...What processor did you put on your MSI K7n2
Delta? You didn't say anything in your description of relevant parts (And I
am just curious...I'm not saying it even is relevant) I see your MB does
have an AGP slot(To answer my own question earlier)is the following
correct?...New MB, old processor, new HD, new Ram, New FULL? version of XP,
PCI Video Card...correct so far? You put it all together, boot up with the
XP CD in, choose install, Format using NTFS, follow the prompts...Then MB
Drivers from CD, then Video drivers from CD, turn on XP Firewall, download
Windows updates, install anti-virus, and update definitions...is this all
what you did, in this order?

There's NOTHING wrong with the MB you currently have. We are bouncing back
between both of your posts. Read my CURRENT answer to your "Other" post. I
hope we can get this resolved.
