I remember this used to happen occasionally pre-Win 95,
but I cannot remember how I used to fix it, nor can I
figure out to fix it in Windows XP....

It's like the Program window in its "normal" size is
stuck behind the desktop, so that it appears to be
minimized even when not. i.e., "restoring" the window
has no effect. The only way for me to view it is in its
maximized form.

How can I retrieve the window?

thank you!

Usually this happens when a window moves out of the visible desktop area.

Try a right click on the taskbar and choose Cascade Windows. That should
rope that stray window and bring it back into view.

Alternatively, right click the taskbar button for the program and select
Move. Then use the arrow keys to move the window. Unfortunately since
you can't see where the window is hiding -- off to the left, off to the
right, too high or too low -- you have no way of knowing *which* arrow
key is going to help. You will have to experiment a few minutes before it
shows up.
