I'm using Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service
Pack 1, 384 MB RAM P4 1.7 GHz. Virtual memory is set to
576 - 2304 MB.

I've problem with installing new softwares / updates [eg.
Window Messanger 5.0 or Office 2003 Beta 2 Technical
Refresh]. When I try to install these files, the
following error message appears:

"Extracting file failed. It was most likely caused by low
memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted
Cabinet file".

I could not assume that it is due to low memory, given my
PC's configuration. Could it be due to corrupted cabinet
file? Any help? Thanks

Hi,

Common installation problems are usually cured by restarting the machine,
then....

1) Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

2) Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software.
Use ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

Two possibilities occur: It is trying to unpack the files in TEMP or
Temporary Internet FIles, and the directory concerned is either
overloaded, or already contains a copy of one of the files, which is set
read-only. So clear these folders out . For Temp INternet files, in
INternet OPtions - click Delete FIles, for TEMP look in System -
Advanced - click Environmental Variables to find which is the actual
folder being use for TEMP and for TMP - then ensure that hidden files
are visible and clear them out with Explorer

OR - although the page file is set to those values you have put it on a
different drive, and not left a notional amount possible on C:. Not
having that is inclined to stop the memory management working properly.
I suggest initial 2 max 50 on C: and click the Set button after setting
that up.
