Used to use Total Unistall (was it?) but not free anymore is it? ...
anything similar now?

nirsoft's MyUninstaller works pretty good too (even shows hidden installs
and activex installs)

What's the best one?

Thanks.

Ian.

PS: tidying up my machine and fed up with the time it takes Windows to load
up [Control Panel] Add/Remove programs so need something that's quick and
gets rid of all the registry entries etc. Used to use Total Unistall (was
it?) but not free anymore is it? ... anything similar now?

The last freeware version is available:

Program: Total Uninstall (v 2.35)
Author: (Gavrila Martau (Gabi))
W: LFW
Ware: (Freeware) v 2.35

I'll second that, I have been using it for three years and it does a great
job.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/myuninst.html

MyUninstall has its uses but given that it only uses the uninstaller
(hopefully) provided with the original application, it probably won't
do a 100% job of removing an application; app uninstallers rarely do.
So in many ways MU is simply a convenience.

By contrast Total Uninstaller works differently by snapshotting the
file system and registry *before* installation of an application and
then again afterwards, and retains a small file with the
differences/changes made by the new application during its install.

Complete uninstallation later on then becomes more certain and won't
leave you with piles of junk all over the registry and file system.

Excellent, thanks for the link Susan.

Nothing any better then?

Thanks.

Ian,
If you didn't monitor an installation when you were putting the
program on your computer, there's really no way to ensure that you can
remove it completely. The best thing you could do would be to do a total
reinstall of everything and this time, use Total Uninstall to monitor as
much of it as you can. Obviously, you won't be able to use the program
to monitor installation of your OS.

An important omission of Total Uninstaller, which I use, is: It only
tracks changes within the registry. It does not track or restore changes
to all the other possible ini files such as, win.ini, system.ini,
autoexec.bat, config.sys, progman.ini etc. etc.

One way around this is to use it in combination with Inctrl3 which does
track changes to win.ini and system.ini.

I am not sure if total uninstaller will record deletion of files, as well
as added ones.

I've been using My Uninstaller for some time and have really liked it.
Recently however, I've been using Uninstall Tool from
http://www.crystalidea.com/ and like it even better. You might check it
out also.

TU actually tracks changes in the registry *and* new additions to
the file system. It doesn't track files which are overwritten, files
which are deleted or files which are changed (like those you list).
This makes it less than perfect for monitoring installations although
I'm not aware of how often files get changed.

But afaik it's the best available and it still provides better
tracking than MyUninstall.

I've not come across Inctrl3 ...please post a link if poss.

No it doesn't do this.

We live in an imperfect world.
