program to count links on website?

Sorry - did a web search and saw this one without trying it out - doesn't
look promising as it won't download the file - a bit suspicious :)

He said he was looking for a program. Not a web site. That program
doesn't appear to be freeware..."15 day trial version".

Freeware link validators might help him but I don't know which ones
will give him the number of links.

Well, this one's not a program, but a snippet of Javascript. If you go
to http://www.bookmarklets.com and save Number Of Links as a bookmark,
when you have a page with links open, click the bookmark and it will
tell you the number of links on the page. Works in IE and Firefox.
