program locks up and wont accept product key

I bought outlook 2003 new and i am running xp professional 02. Outlook locks
up each time i try to use it. i tried to email for tech support and entered
the product key listed inside the cover, and i get a message that the product
key is incorrect. what do i do ? your help is most appreciated.
