My computer suddenly had problems when running programs.
Any programs I launch aborts/ends after sometime. I
thought this was a virus so I went ahead and downloaded a
virus scan software. But even the installation of the
virus software aborts after some time ... so I can't
really install it. I don't know how to proceed from here
as any programs I call (i.e. regedit) is being aborted.
I try to do a system restore...but it did not fix the
problem. It seems that svchost.exe and windows
explorer.exe is taking too much CPU.

Hope to hear from you experts...Thanks.

Hi, Nel. Well, it definitely sounds like you have a virus, which would
stop you from installing a full-featured antivirus program. First, get
the infected computer off the Internet and off any lans. Then turn off
System Restore (from the System applet in Control Panel - look for the
System Restore tab, check the "disable System Restore box) and reboot
into Safe Mode. To get to Safe Mode, start tapping F8 when the computer
starts up. This will get you to the necessary menu to choose Safe Mode.
On another computer, download the standalone antivirus program Stinger.
Here is the url: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ which you are going
to run in Safe Mode. You don't need to install this, just double-click
the .exe file. Hopefully Stinger will find and take care of whatever
viruses you have. Then you can reboot into regular mode and install the
big antivirus program, update its definitions, and then do another
scan. Again, scan in Safe Mode.

If you need more help, repost and include what you've already done to
troubleshoot.
