How do I get a XP machine to logon to a domain and keep its profile the
same.

I have a system where I have just Installed a 2003 server

The users have until now been using a workgroup but I now need them to
logon to the domain.
With win98 this is not I issue ( but neither is security )
However under XP it creates a new profile for the user, I like the rolling
hills and windows tour just as much as the next person. But I have some
people who really want their profiles back.

For a workaround I have been using File transfer wizard, but I have one guy
with 140Gb used, and there are some things missing.

Is there a way to copy a profile without having to into all sorts of
painful processes. I used to be able to do this under NT4 but XP
seems to be a little fussy about this.

Mike,

Have you tried going into the User Profiles tab and simply
copied the "workgroup" profile over to the "network"
profile? Simply have the user log on to the network to
create that profile. This is the first step. Then simply
select the "workgroup" profile, click on 'Copy To...' and
then select the "network" profile. Should do the trick.

Mind you, this is how I do things in WIN2000. IIRC, there
is an easier way in WINXP...Something about the user
Profile Migration Tool. Sorry that I do not know exactly
what it is called. I have not worked all that much with
WINXP!

I hope that I have pointed you in the right direction.

The easiest way is to rename the profile folder.
Log in with the new domain account to create a new
profile folder. Log off. Log in as local admin and delete
the profile folder that has just been created, then
rename the old profile folder to the new profile folder
name.
