I bought a computer from a local business that already had Windows XP, but when It boots up and shows the desktop and icons then locks up and will not let me open anything. So I formatted the hard drive and attempted to reinstall XP with the disk and serial number that they provided. But the numbers that they gave me is not the product key. So now I have a four year computer that I payed 300 for that I does not even have a OS now. I called the company that I got the computer from and they were unable to find any number besides the serial number(DS/N US-07594T-71391-3AQ-11B6) and Dell software license agreement that I got with the computer. What I want to know is there anyway that I get a product key using the serial number above or the software license agreement that I have as proof of purchase of XP OS. If not that really sucks.

If they can't give you the product key number, then they should give you a
new copy of windows. But I would imagine it's going to suck.

Greetings --

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use AIDA32
Enterprise from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php or ViewKeyXP from
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm to find the Product Key.
(If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and haven't since
reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably of the drive
image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product Key;
therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not be --
used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.

if the computer is a dell and came with XP, you can check this at Dell's
site. Then contact Dell they should be willing to help. If the person you
get does not speak English well, tell them you are going to call back It
may take a few times they have tech support farmed out to India for
consumers!

"If its XP Pro Corp ill give ya a key, save ou some time."
As well as all the "benefits" that come with stolen keys such as lack
of updates etc.

Surely you are not foolish enough to advertise criminal activity with
your Email and ISP in view for everyone!
