Your problem is very unique.

Make sure you've accurately typed the product key for your version of VISTA.

Make sure you are using the correct product key - and not the product key
for Office, or another Windows OS...

I often have to enter my product key several times before I get it right.
Things like 'B' vs. '8', etc.
 
I had that happen to me with an XP install. I called Microsoft support and
they just gave me another product key on the phone which worked
properly. -William
 
Hi, Frank.

At least, Vista warns us if we mistype a group of 5 characters. ;<) With
earlier Windows, we didn't know which batch the error was in so we had to
scrutinize all 25 characters. :>(

Or lower case "L's" and the number 1. Depending on the font, it can be very
hard to discern which is which....
