The Sony installed Home edition is an OEM version, you're trying to
install a retail version as an upgrade. You will have to do a clean
install with your Pro upgrade. Make sure that you are able to provide
proof of the upgrade during the installation. The Sony restore CD
does not qualify as proof. Use a Win98, WinME, or Win2000 CD as
proof.

The retail XP Pro upgrade will upgrade a OEM Home version. OEM versions will
not upgrade, retail versions will. The OP is possibly mixing up some letters
and numerals.

You should be able to do an upgrade to Pro over an OEM Home, provided
you use a proper Full or Upgrade Pro CD, run it from the Home System,.
and use the Product Key that came with the Pro CD, not (as I suspect
happened) the one provided with the machine for the Home system

That is not correct. A retail upgrade version of XP Pro will upgrade
an OEM version of XP Home with no problems.

You are probably reading the product key from the Pro Upgrade package
incorrectly. Common mistakes include mixing up B and 8 or G and 6.

Note that you must use the product key that came with the Pro Upgrade.
The original product key for your XP Home will only work for that
version (XP Home OEM) and will not work with XP Pro (or with retail
versions of XP Home).

Good luck

Boy, that's for sure. I just did the same thing today with a B and an 8.
Of course, it would help to read it if the code wasn't printed in 6
point font over the top of the holographic-silver "genuine" words
plastered all over the off-white-slightly-sickening-pink background on
sticker.

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your <CapsLock> is _off_ while entering the
Product Key -- this isn't supposed to make a difference, but I've seen
it do so.
