Processor Running at 25% Load

Task manager shows a continual CPU usage of 25 to 28%. The CPU used to run
at 1 to 2%. I can find not applications running (other than MS Office and
Norton AV) and I've tried stopping different processes to see if it would
make any difference. Is there any way to find out why the CPU load is at
25%? How can I find out what is going on?

Thanks.

If you are using task manager to see the 25% load, you can switch to the
process tab and list all running processes. Click the CPU heading to sort by
processor load. Then you'll know what the problem is. If it makes no sense
then of course feel free to post your findings and we can go on from there.

Yes I was using Task Manager to see the 25% load. I've already looked a the
process tab and re-sorted using the CPU column. The problem is that the
percents for the processes do not add up to the 25 % CPU load: The process
tab shows:
- Usually 95% for system idle
- 1-3% for rundll.exe
- 1-5% for taskmgr
- 1% for explorer.exe

I also have a problem with very slow start-up and slow shutdowns.

Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've run a virus scan, as well as spybot search
and destroy. nothing is reported. Is there any way to see what gets loaded
and runs during start up? Maybe if I take a look at that I can see if
something unusual is going on....
