Problems with upgrade to Windows XP

Have installed upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home
Edition twice, but didn't realize that I needed to first
UNinstall Norton Antivirus. Luckily, I had saved an
image of my harddrive and now have twice restored it, so
I'm back to Windows 98 again. When I installed the XP
upgrade, the last step in the process was a reboot, and
that's when the computer totally locked up and I had to
kill the power and restart. Then checkdisk ran and I got
an error. That was the beginning of the problems.
Sometimes things would run fine, but sometimes the
computer would lock up and I'd have to kill the power
again and restart...always with checkdisk finding
problems....usually saying the "first allocation sector
was invalid" and that the file(s) would be truncated. I
think that this process corrupted a number of files,
until finally the system was totally messed up. I worked
my way through an uninstall and reinstallation of Norton
Antivirus, and the same with AOL 9.0, and thought things
were fine, until I installed some new software last
night, and then the computer would not boot up without
locking up totally...thus...restoration of the disk image
once again.

My question is...has anyone else had a similar
experience? Now that I've uninstalled Norton Antivirus
and AOL 9.0, do I have a better chance that the upgrade
process to Windows XP will work? Any other suggestions?
This is getting frustrating, as the upgrade process takes
a long time...as does the restoration of the harddrive
image. Any help would be appreciated.
