I'm running XP Professional on a Dell Inspiron 8600. I'm having problems
when I try to shut down or restart my computer. The shut down process just
stops when it comes to the blue window where it sais "windows is shutting
down...". Does anyone know how to solve that problem?

I have the same problem with an Intel D850GBAL motherboard. On this same
hardware, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows 2000, can all properly shut
down. Only Windows XP just hangs up with the screen displaying "windows
is shutting down". I filed a tech support request on this, and the
response I got was it was hardware related, in spite of the fact that
the other OS's have no problem doing a shut down on this system. The
tech support person just closed the case without ever resolving it.

In my case I have Windows ME also installed on the same system.
In order to shut down, I restart into Windows ME and then shutdown.
