I am trying to write the table of contents for my dissertation, but when I
try to use the Insert->Index->Table of Contents thing, as the tutorial
describes, I get this error every time, regardless of how much I try and
manipulate my text.

Error! No table of contents entries found.

I don't understand what would be causing this. Any ideas? It works when I
type in gibberish, but when I type in my table of contents information, it
gets me everytime.
Thanks

Do you have heading styles in your document? Or have you set the Table of
Contents Options to pick up the styles you're using for headings? See

I do have heading styles in my document. And the table of contents options
are supposed to pick them up. I also tried following the whole tutorial you
presented, to no avail. It still has the same error. I will keep tinkering
with it, in hopes it will respond.
Thank you for your help though.

Are your headings in text boxes, by any chance? Word can't see text in text
boxes. If you have a legitimate need to wrap the headings, convert the text
boxes to frames.
