Problems with software upgrades & patches

I am trying to download a patch to protect my computer
from the W32.Sasser worm, but my computer will not accept
the patch. I asks if CRYPTOGRAHIC SERVICE is running.
What does this mean?

Go to the following website and click the ? icon next to "Why can't I
download updates?" scroll down to the "Correct the cryptographic service
error message" link and click it to download the fix. Double click the
downloaded file to run. Try Windows Update again.

Go to Windows Update - I forget the number, but there is a critical update
available.
