Problems with Security Update for sasser virus---------PLEASE HELP!

My friend is running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 and with
the recent new virus Sasser causing so many problems all
over we tried to download the security patch but when we
try to run it we get and error message saying "(name of
patch file)....is not a valid 32-bit application" we are
not able to correct this problem. Microsoft says it is
possibly caused by spyware. We used Adaware to clean
spyware. Then we were told to download SpySweeper but when
we tried, we get same message, ".....not a valid 32-bit
application"!! WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS AND HOW DO WE FIX
IT????? PLEASE HELP
