I have constant problems with Norton since SP1 was installed. NAV is the worst trouble worker it frequently reports that autoprotect will not work and that the software should be reinstalled and uninstalled. LiveUpdate also often reports difficulties about not being able to update some file in the system32 folder. Every time an uninstall is required and then a reinstall. I have tried McAffee and it was worse.
What is the best solution? Just install NAV so that there will be less to go wrong and disable autoprotect?

I cannot understand why Microsoft do not include virus checking in the XP Pro software.

Norton is a huge time waster and the support is not good.

Suggest you go for help from Norton, or consider procurring a different
product from another vendor.

Symantec products have a problem with Legacy/Remnants left in the Registry
that cause operational problems when you upgrade or install newer versions.
(Things like Auto-Protect will not start, Live Update fails to retrieve
updates.)

I've run into this a number of times, you can successfully fix the problem
but
it takes a little work.

**Do Not Use this if you have other Symantec products installed.
Symantec products share common system components.

1. Go to Symantec's web site, locate and download RNAV.Exe
(This is a RegCleaner for Symantec Anti-Virus programs)
2. Add/Remove programs - Uninstall Norton Anti-Virus -Reboot
3. Add/Remove programs - Uninstall LiveReg
4. Add/Remove programs - Uninstall LiveUpdate
5. Search for "Symantec" - Remove "ALL" folders named "Symantec Shared"
(There will be several instances of this folder)
6. Run RNAV - Refuse the Add/Remove option, let the program clean up.
7. Reboot - Run MMC, verify Cryptographic Services and Terminal Services are
running. (Required for NAV to install successfully.)
8. Re-install Norton Anti-Virus, (Keep Internet Connection active) - Run
Live
update, do not reboot at conclusion - then Rerun Live update Again.
9. Reboot - Allow NAV to perform full system scan, Configure any options
such as Weekly scheduled scans, etc..

Was having the same sort of problem. Downloaded from the
symantec site the rnav2003.exe removal utility and then
reinstalled. Norton now works fine after trying for two
weeks to fix this.
