Problems with Network

Hi

We're trying to enable a network for 4 pcs of varying ages - 3 XP's and 1 ME
- in fact we've been struggling with it for about a year now!

We're using a Linksys router but it's quite an old one - it's a WRT54G v.2.
Although we have had limited sucess wirelessly connecting at times, the
connection kept disappearing for no apparent and has now gone altogether.

Can anyone tell me if this is becuase of the router we're using? Or whether
there is some fundamental set-up thing that we're not doing please?

One of the pcs I am trying to connect to is a new XP Media Center one, and
after trying to include it in our mostly non-functional network, it said that
it probably wouldn't work and referred me to MS article 87112. This basically
seems to suggest that the router is unsupported by WIndows.

So, I suppose what I really want to know is, is this actually the case? Or
has anyone found a way round it please?

Hope someone can help!

That router does not need any support by WinDuhs. I'm currently using a
WRT54Gv2 router to network 7 PCs, including XP PRO, XP HE, W2K PRO, and W9x.
All of those PCs share files with each other, all share the 2 or 3 printers
connected to a couple of those PCs, and all PC get to the web via that
router's WAN port, tied to a cable modem.

{If you're curious, one PC ties to the router via WiFi; 3 PCs tie to the
router
via direct wired links, and 3 PCs connect via a hub to the 4th wired port of
that router. And, on some days, an 8th widget is also on that net; not
a PC, it is a Nintendo using WiFi.}

A couple of hints for debugging your LAN:
- temporarily disable the WinDuhs firewalls, and uninstall all other
firewalls
- use one PC hardwired to the router to setup the router
