Problems with modem under XP

I'm having a problem using my modem under Windows XP.
Although the modem appears to be working properly under
Device Manager, and responds to the diagnostics allright,
no application can seem to find my modem, and whenever I
try to create a dial-up connection, it always ends up
using "Unavailable Device (COM1)", instead of my modem (a
HSP56 MicroModem on COM3). The "Connect Using" box on the
Properties dialog is disabled, so I can't change it.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

While writing this reply I decided to do some checking and have found
that your modem is not compatible with the XP operating system. So your
only recourse is to get a new modem.

Which isn't a bad thing considering my research has found that this
particular modem is a winmodem and a very low quality winmodem at that.
Also the manufacturer has droped out of the modem business, which from
what I read is a good thing. They don't even support their modems
anymore in even the most basic fashion.

For older drivers go to: http://conexant.com/support/ When you get to
the driver download section you will note that the XP driver is not for
your modem, but for the last line of pctel modems produced.

But the good news is that you can get a .92 modem with more advanced
features than you current modem. In my opinion you would also benefit
from a hardware modem versus a winmodem.
