Hello,
I am having a problem with my wireless usb adapter
in that it seems that the flow of information coming to my
computer seems to stall if you will every couple of
minutes. These delays only last for 5-20 seconds. It
isnt very annoying for general browsing purposes or
Instant Messaging, however when I connecto to Ventrillo
(a voice chat program) or play online games, it causes
EXTREME LAG Issues. It does not boot me from the server,
however it causes severly irritating breaks in
gameplay/chat. (when the flow satarts again I tend to
lose what was said, or it all floods me oddly.
If anyone is having a similar problem, or has had a
similar problem and found a solution please help.
Thanks
Joe

Trying changing the wireless channel number. Do you have cordless phones in
your house that use 2.GHz? Is your router in a good location?

Yeah I tried that already, no effect. I also tried
installing the latest drivers, which as it happens are on
the cd that came with the device.

Thanks though

I am not familiar with the adapter itself, but this has been an artifact
of having 802.11x authentication in the network setup. It might also be
caused by a competing wireless signal that WZC tries to connect to. In
your preferred networks list, remove all except your current network.
From the advanced button uncheck "automatically connect to non-preferred
networks", and check the box "infrastructure networks only". On your
router, set it to broadcast SSID.

Make sure you don't have programs running periodically in the
background that are polling Internet sites on a regular
basis...thereby use up your CPU and/or bandwidth.

Some of these can be...OE (checking for mail), IE (checking for
updates), weather programs updating, etc. There are many other
programs out there like that.

I am having the same problem. I tried my laptop at the
same location as my computer with the USB Adapter, and
thre is no problem with the laptop (using a Cisco 350
Adapter). Please let me know if you find out anything.

These symptoms and the original poster sound like what happens on my desktop
that runs XP Home. I don't know if the version number on the Linksys
adaptor matters or not. It's clearly just dropping out for a few seconds
(my observation is more like 5 than 15. If I put up the linksys
configuration tool, signal strength and link quality blink out during this.
I even contacted Linksys, who only suggested updating drivers, which didn't
seem to help.

Thanks, This seemed to help a little, but i still get
pauses every so often.

I just remembered the solution...kinda! lol...but you'll hafta search
for the EXACT solution.

XP is searching the other nodes on a regular basis to check for
updates. There's a fix for that...and that's the part I don't
remember! lol

All I remember is that its a simple registry hack.

Try a Google search...xp poling nodes

Good luck.

Found the problem in a newsgroup. Apparently Windows XP uses "Wireless Zero COnfiguration" to poll for a better network constantly. This "hangs up" your network until it completes. The fix is to stop this process (service) - but only AFTER you have booted and found your network (or it will never be able to find the network). So, once your system is up and running, do the following:

Go to: "Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services"
Select "Wireless Zero Configuration"
Click on "Stop" (in blue at the top left of the window

That will stop the process and the hang-ups. If you need to reconnect to the network after that , just go back in and hit "start" and it will restart the process.

Hope this helps,

Larry

Thanks a lot. I'll try it too. My company desktop uses the Windows XP Zero Configuration with Linksys Wireless USB Adapter. And we are having the same problem. At first we thought it was the NetGear AP. But since we exchange it for a Linksys AP, we are still having this problem. Sigh.. this is driving us NUTS. We'll try what you suggested. Thanks for the knowledge.

Guys! It seems to be working. When i shut down WinXP Wireless Zero Configuration Utility, I've never experience any network drop at the moment. This seems to be Good NEWS! To those of u who so happen to use WinXP + Linksys Wireless USB Adapter, give this solution a try. It work for me so far.. No harm trying

Thanks anyway for the info on the first place.
