Problems with Java

I just got a new laptop with XP Home and upgraded to XP
Pro. I'm having problems with getting Java to work...I
get the little red "X" thing when I go to a page that
requires Java to view. I went through the Microsoft
Knowledge Base and all of Java's Help Section and went
through all the resolutions given, to no avail. I
uninstalled Java and then tried to reinstall it but when
the installation nears the end I get this error
message: "Java Update fails to apply changes to your
system." There is no Icon for Java in the Control Panel
like there's supposed to be but it is listed in the
Add/Remove Programs list. I have no idea what to do
about this...any suggestions?

Actually, I just had a bit of trouble installing Java on my new system,
too. I got mine from Sun, here: http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp/

After several failed installations, I went into the Windows Temp files
and also looked for Java Temporary install folder and deleted anything
left over. I'm sorry to not be more precise as to the location of the
files, but I wasn't keeping notes. After removing all the cruft left
over from the failed installations, Java installed smoothly. Look in
your User account temp files as well as Windows. If you are
uncomfortable poking around and/or don't know what to look for, post
back and someone will pop in with more precise locations I'm sure.
