Problems with installing Eval SP1

I keep on getting a VBScripot error while trying to install ther component
DB. The Occurs at :

Status : Setting the value of 'cmiRepRootPath'

And the error is as follows :

'Setup has detected that other applications are currently using the
component database. You should close all applications which are using the
database defore continuing'

Apart from anti - Virus software (AVG 7), no other applications are running.

System info : Windows 2000 SP 4

The microsoft update center tells me that I do not need any updates to my
system, so I would assume that all patches etc are applied.

The installer is version 2.

What am I doing wrong? Or what should I check for?

Here's my two cents worth which I expect others many disagree with. You'll be
happier if you install into an XP Pro system. I've installed Eval SP1 into both
W2K and XP Pro systems and although I did not experience installation problems
as you have, I did experience tool crashes and behaviors inconsistent with the
tutorials when I used W2K.

Hehehehehe .... not possible. This would require reformatting my
development machine and installing XP. Since I also do a lot of dev in linux,
I REALLY don't want to do that at all ...

But thanks all the same. I am certain it is one of the windows services -
but which one?

Yep, it's a clean install. I am following the instructions that come with the
install CD exactly (there's a very good & helpful "howto" that displays), and
it's still not working. I will follow your link and install the stuff.

AFAIK, MSDE is NOT installed.

Check out Event Viewer log to see if any good info there.Here's the event log :

Also, turn off the AV software you mentioned earlier.

No, it's not the AV. Installing on my machine with all apps turned off and
the network cable unplugged, I got the same error. In fact, even worse -
after un - insalling, I got more errors.

Finally, some clue : I took the disks home last night and tried a clean
install on my machine at home : very similar setup. During the installation
of the DB Engine, the following error displayed :

ole32db.dll is not installed or corrupted

I would expect that if this dll is corrupted, it would affect DB access
somewhat dramatically .... if this is the problem, it explains why the DBE is
installed, but the app can't get to it.

I'll see if I can find a clean oledb32.dll somewhere ...

Well, I am becoming convinced that I cannot install the eval edition on my
system. Now I cannot get the MSDE installed. Notwithstanding the fact that
it installed yesterday, it will not do so today. And there are no errors in
the error log - the log table is empty. The System log file just tells me
that the installer is exiting and the install has failed. And nothing seems
to work - not using SAPWD, not installing as Admin. It just bombs.

And I though Linux was a bitch to install .....

:-(
 
Fixed.

Deleted all the MSSQL directories and files created during the install
process on C: drive.

Installed MSDAC 2.8

reboot

Installed the MSDE first

Installed the rest of the stuff.\

MDAC would be a proper fix for you. I just read the message where you fix it with the MDAC.
