I just installed Office 2003. Word is giving me fits, this is the fourth installation. I both installed an upgrade and that did not work versus entire program. The error messages I keep getting are that it cannot open PDFMaker.dot or Pubmapp.dot (I suspect a template from Adobe Acrobat and from my PDA. So what do I do

In addition it tells me the "file normal has already exists and do I want to replace the existing file?". Then if I cancel it won't close.

Finally when I try to open a doc (either Word XP or 2003, it tells me that the file is not available

Help

Stop reinstalling Word. You are wasting your time. It will not replace your
personalisations that are causing the problems - and in particular the
add-ins.

With Word closed:

You need the correct version of PDFMaker.dot and it must be placed in the
Office startup folder, which, by default, will be located at: - C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP

Download the most recent upgrade to Acrobat from Adobe -
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows

Pubmapp.dot I don't know about - but it could be for an earlier Word
version. Remove it from the startup folder - in this case probably the Word
startup folder, which by default will be at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup

normal.dot is a hidden file. Display hidden files and rename it to
oldnormal.dot.

Clear out any junk left from the crashes
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
- and restart Word

If you have Norton AV installed, uncheck its office plug-in.

It's not Pubmapp.dot but PALMAPP.DOT. It comes from PalmPilot. I've never
seen a post from anyone who claimed to actually need it.

Okay, some progress. I followed the what to do when word crashes info. Also renamed normal as oldnormal. After downloading the Adobe PDF update, got the error message again, and checked for the PDF file under Office11\startup and it is there.

Still cannot open any word docs, keep getting message that file is unavailable. This includes a file that I originated and saved from Word 2003

Just a thought - check tools > options > security. Set the macro security to
medium and also the option to trust installed templates and add-ins.
Do you have both Word 2002 and 2003 on the same operating system (first
message)? This is bound to cause conflicts. There is insufficient difference
between them to justify having both - though if you are supporting users who
have both there are grounds for having dual boot options or virtual PCs to
segregate them.

I had Office XP prior to installing 2003. I did a complete installation and the message was that old versions of Office were removed. I did not remove them manually from the control panel option

I changed the macro security level, it did not seem to help. What I want to be able to open is my old word files. Still get the message that "this file is not available". Same with text files. I can open them in Wordpad, but not word

Then every time I attempt to close, "the file normal already exists" (I did rename normal--oldnormal; then"Changes have been made that effect the global template. Do you want to save those changes?

One more thought, I am running Dragon Naturally Speaking. Are there incompatibility issues with the Word voice activated system? Also I did not find where to eliminate the Norton Antivirus plug-in (I am running the corporate edition

Have you disabled the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus?

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

I am really not a novice here and I opened Norton, however I am running Corporate edition and there is no menu item for options. I can install an unopened copy of Norton 2002, unless that won't configure either or go to Best Buy tomorrow and get 2004

I also am wondering if this is connected with Dragon Naturally Speaking, will be doing the download of the latest version and contacting Lunis Olcott at Knowbrainer

In that case, here's the CE fix from Office MVP Beth Melton:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
